Mission
Our objective is to become a model shelter to receive children and adolescents sent by the Tutelary Council of Florianópolis, for the necessary or temporary permanence, until they can be reintroduced into their original families, to find substitute families through adoption, national or international, or to prepare for independent living, after completing 18 years of age.
Goals
To shelter children and adolescents of ages 07 to 18, according to the Child and Adolescent Statute, providing shelter, food, extra classes, informal education, sport activities, medical assistance, among other activities related to the overall development of the sheltered.
History
During the Summer of 1993, youngsters of the Emaús Movement, led by the spirit of service and with conviction that “faith without deeds is dead”, started a support Project supervised by a Father, in the Município Rancho Queimado, 75 km from Florianópolis, (SC). Although this work was interrupted by the dissolution of the house that sheltered these children and adolescents, it brought various members of various groups of the Emaús Movement closer together, and this resulted in the creation of the Social Action Mission Association in March 1993, constituted as a non profit private entity, of philanthropic nature, that had as purpose to be responsible for the maintenance of a shelter that would work as a home where children and adolescents, boys only, between 6 and 18, live. The sheltering measure is stated in Law no 8.069/90, in the Estatuto da Criança e Adolescente (ECA)(Child and Adolescent Statute). According to Article 101, Clause VII of the Law mentioned above, the sheltering measure must only be applied after all other measures of protection fail, where the objective is to protect the child or adolescents from violations suffered in their families. Since the beginning of its activities, more than 50 children have been through the “Casalar Emaús”. Only a few returned to their original families, and some were adopted by substitute families, and others stay until the maximum age limit, leaving to lead an independent life. The maintenance of the Home always occurred through conventions with state and county public organizations, and through spontaneous donations. Most of the people connected to the institution, including the board of directors, voluntarily donate their time to the children and adolescent being sheltered.
